Boston got a valiant performance from pitcher Fernando Sanchez, but it wasn't enough to beat the St. Louis Lions. St. Louis won the game, 5-3. Sanchez threw 7.0 innings of 4-hit ball for the losing team. Ben Sumpter, who is tied for 3rd in the EC with a 0.93 WHIP, was the winner. He's now 3-0. The loser was Glenn Fannin. The save was credited to Jack Reynolds, his 5th.

St. Louis used the timely hitting of Julio Gonzales to seize the win. The right fielder stroked a 2-run single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Lions on top, 4-3. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

St. Louis manager Leo Cruz called it "a good, solid win."

With the victory, the Lions upped their record to 14-6.
