Steele, Diablos Take Dramatic Game 1 for 1-0 Series Lead
|
The El Paso Diablos started the Cup Qualifier in dramatic fashion, stealing Game 1 from the Houston Mavericks in a walk-off in the 10th inning. El Paso took the 3-2 win thanks in large part to a good day from starter Jesse Steele. The left-hander threw 6.0 innings of 5-hit ball in the win, which gave the Diablos a 1-0 lead to start the best-of-7 series.
Batting in the bottom of the tenth, 2007 Hitter of the Year Award winner Howie Park had a real shot to win the game. Houston pitcher Matthew Browning was determined not to let it happen. But with no outs, Park hit a run-scoring single. The Diablos had a walk-off triumph.
Park called the win "an overall solid one."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Inferno Field in El Paso.
