Houston Earns 2-1 Win
|
Luke Whalen was nothing short of phenomenal for the Houston Mavericks. The 34-year-old right-hander was a big reason his team beat the Los Angeles Knights, 2-1. The winning pitcher was Whalen, now 9-7. He tossed 7 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 3 and fanning 7. Matthew Browning was credited with the save, his 8th in 11 tries.
Houston used the timely hitting of Alan Tompkins to seize the win. The left fielder stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Mavericks on top, 2-1. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"Coulda, shoulda, woulda," said Los Angeles manager Jason Tudor. "We had our chances and didn't cash in."
The win elevated the Mavericks to 48-37.
