Starting pitcher Bob James had a solid game. He was a big reason the Atlanta Pilots throttled the Boston Shamrocks, 9-1. Alex Perez, credited with the win in relief, is now 1-0. He allowed no runs on no hits in 3.1 innings. With their winning streak at 4, the Pilots have raced to a strong start this season.

The game was at a stalemate until shortstop Abel Smith came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Boston pitcher Isiah McNeal, he hit a 1-0 splitter for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Atlanta on top, 2-1.

"You start putting runs on the board and winning, everyone's going to get excited," said Smith.
