Detroit Hopeless Against Whitfield
|
The Detroit Chargers manager was philosophical in the clubhouse following a shutout loss to the Mexico City Aztecas. The Chargers were overpowered by Mexico City starter Jason Whitfield, who hurled his club to victory, 8-0.
"It was just one of those games -- shake it off and do better next time," Kirila Lemana said.
Over 9 innings, Whitfield blanked Detroit on 5 hits with no walks and 6 strikeouts.
"I kept them off balance. I could tell a lot of them were late on fastballs because they were fouling them off. Once you see that, it sets them up for other pitches," Whitfield said.
"I set them up, where if they chased one breaking ball, they were going to chase another one."
To date, Whitfield has a 4-3 mark in 11 starts with a 4.38 ERA. He has given up 73 hits in 76 innings, struck out 73 and issued 19 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .253 batting average against him.
