Southern California pitcher Kjeld Sijbrandij had a large part in his team beating the Vancouver Bruins, 3-2. The right-hander kept opposing batters in check throughout the game. Southern California is now 34-43.

Southern California got a lift in the bottom of the fourth from shortstop Ricky Bernal, who hit a slider to left-center for a run-scoring double. His 14th double of the season put the Empires up, 3-2.

"This isn't football or hockey where you can overwhelm your opponents," Bernal told the Southern California Times. "Everyone gets 27 outs and we happened to make the most of them."
