Empires Slip Past Mexico City, 2-1

The Southern California Empires downed the Mexico City Aztecas, 2-1, at Empires Stadium. Stellar pitching by William Conant had a lot to do with it. The right-hander, who finished 5th in the SPBC in wins with 9 in 2002, handcuffed his opponent all game. Mark Fielding, who finished 4th in the SPBC in saves with 16 last year, picked up the win in relief. Ronnie Jacobs took the loss for Mexico City. Mexico City, with the loss, is 3-4.
The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the ninth inning, when Southern California left fielder Dave Gregory, facing Ronnie Jacobs, had a run-scoring walk. It gave the Empires the 2-1 win.
"William pounded the strike zone and made good pitches when he needed to," said Southern California manager John Andrews.
