The Newark Eagles inaugurated the 2008 campaign with a disappointing 10-1 loss to the Southern California Empires at Eagles Park. Southern California designated hitter Chad Fergerson had a big impact on the outcome. He was 2-3 with 2 home runs and 2 walks. Southern California starter Kjeld Sijbrandij was credited with the win after throwing 111 pitches over 6.2 innings. His record now stands at 1-0.

Early in the game, Fergerson had a solo home run for Southern California. It was his 2nd home run of the season and put the Empires on top, 1-0.
