In a low-scoring affair between the Hamilton Tigers and the Newark Eagles, pitcher Howard Berard was the difference between victory and defeat. The Hamilton right-hander earned kudos in the 1-0 Tigers win. Berard, now 2-3, was the winner. In 7 innings, he gave up 7 hits, while striking out 9, walking 2, and allowing no runs. The win lifted the Hamilton record to 16-8.

Emanuel Bilyeu drove in one run for Hamilton. The slick-fielding center fielder had a key at-bat in the bottom of the fourth. With one out and the bases loaded, he broke a 0-0 tie with a run-scoring sacrifice fly off David Martin. It was his 12th RBI of the season.

"I had a good game plan," said Berard. "I made my pitches." His manager concurred. "It was all there," Tim Ebbers said, "the velocity, the sharpness of his pitches."
