Thursday, July 29th , 2027
The Newark (R) Eagles were almost helpless in their 9-0 loss to the Ottawa (R) Capitals and hurler Joe Payne. Payne kept the Eagles confused all game, spinning a 6-hit shutout.
"Tip your hat to Payne," Newark (R) manager Brian Webster said in a postgame interview. "He kept us off balance all night."
The 37-year-old right-hander had 4 walks and 15 strikeouts in a strong performance.
"It just happened to be one of those games where even when I made mistakes, they either fouled them off or someone would make a fine defensive play," Payne said. "It was just one of those games that things went my way."
In 16 starts this season, Payne has gathered 5 wins while suffering 1 loss. He has pitched 94.2 innings, allowed 81 hits, struck out 108 and has a 2.76 ERA.
