St. Louis starter Benno de Smit pitched effectively against the Washington Warriors at Warriors Park. The right-hander led his team to a win, 5-4. The winner was de Smit. He threw 6.1 innings allowing 4 runs. The loser was Wilson Benitez. Jack Reynolds closed the door for St. Louis, picking up his 12th save of the year.

It could have been a different outcome for St. Louis, had it not been for Wade Brett, the slick-fielding third baseman . Brett contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning to put St. Louis up, 5-3.
