Matthew Jacobs of the Southern California Empires was on top of his game.

The 31-year-old tantalized the Mexico City Aztecas with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 3-0.

"He had the changeup working," Mexico City manager Rogelio Sanchez said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Southern California hurler had 7 strikeouts, gave up no walks and surrendered 5 hits in his complete-game effort.

Jacobs told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

This year, Jacobs has registered 11 wins and 5 losses in 18 starts with a 3.02 ERA while registering 140 strikeouts and 38 walks in 131 innings.
