The Mexico City Aztecas were almost helpless in their 9-0 loss to the Southern California Empires and hurler Eddie Vellucci. Vellucci kept the Aztecas confused all game, spinning a 3-hit shutout.

"Tip your hat to Vellucci," Mexico City manager Rogelio Sanchez said in a postgame interview. "He kept us off balance all night."

The 29-year-old right-hander had no walks and 5 strikeouts in a strong performance.

"It just happened to be one of those games where even when I made mistakes, they either fouled them off or someone would make a fine defensive play," Vellucci said. "It was just one of those games that things went my way."

This season, Vellucci has fashioned a 4-0 mark and 0.98 ERA in 36.2 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .211 against him and he has logged 30 strikeouts.
