The El Paso Diablos defeated the New Orleans Voodoo, 10-7. Doing his part was first baseman Javier Blanco, who was 3 for 5 with a double and 2 singles, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 2. Ken Trombley snagged the win in relief. The right-hander allowed no runs on no hits over 2 innings. He's now 2-0 on the season.

The game was at a stalemate until designated hitter Aaron Shelby came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing New Orleans pitcher Victor Ford, he hit a 3-0 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting El Paso on top, 8-7.

"Being in first place now is good," said Blanco. "Being in first at the end of the season is better. That's our goal."

El Paso is sailing along at 42-16.
