Houston (R) Tops Los Angeles (R) Sunday, October 16th , 2022 The Houston (R) Mavericks earned their 2nd Championship Cup title and now have all winter to spend basking in the glory, while the beaten Los Angeles (R) Knights will have plenty of time to wonder what went wrong. Houston (R) became the PBC Rookie Complex League champion for 2022 with a 9-5 triumph to capture the series 4-2. "Both clubs are talented. We just made fewer mistakes than they did," winning manager Tom Smolar said to the press corps at the postgame press conference. "We made the crucial plays and got the timely hits." Los Angeles (R) skipper Mark Wickenkamp agreed with that assessment, saying his club turned out to be "a little weak on fundamentals" at crucial times. "I have a sneaking suspicion we will be working on fundamentals a lot next spring," he said. On the way to the Championship Cup championship, the Mavericks ended up in first place in the Rookie Complex League West Division and compiled a 62-26 record during the regular season.
