David Mounts of the Southern California Empires was on top of his game.

The 28-year-old tantalized the Mexico City Aztecas with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 3-0.

"He had the changeup working," Mexico City manager Beau Beadle said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Southern California hurler had 9 strikeouts, gave up 1 walk and surrendered 2 hits in his complete-game effort.

Mounts told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

This year, Mounts has a 3-4 mark in 10 starts with a 5.34 ERA. He has given up 65 hits in 64 innings, struck out 62 and issued 13 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .260 batting average against him.
