Tompkins Hits Two Dingers, Mavericks Win, 10-8
The Houston Mavericks downed the Boston Shamrocks, 10-8. The hitting star was right fielder Alan Tompkins. Tompkins slugged 2 home runs, while adding 6 RBI and scoring twice for the Mavericks. Houston reliever Darius Hagen got the win, raising his record to 1-0. Ryan Carden was tagged with the loss. Boston, at 16-23, has lost 5 straight.

Had Carlos Vargas not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Vargas hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 8-7, in favor of the Mavericks.
