Ron Clous of the Washington Warriors was on top of his game.

The 34-year-old tantalized the St. Louis Lions with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 7-0.

"He had the changeup working," St. Louis manager Leo Cruz said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Washington hurler had 12 strikeouts, gave up 1 walk and surrendered 2 hits in his complete-game effort.

Clous told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

Checking out his stats for the year, Clous has racked up 7 wins and no losses in 11 starts, posted a 1.91 ERA, and struck out 116 batters in 85 innings.
