Brumfield King of Fling with No-Hitter
Saturday, August 4th , 2012
Avery Brumfield really did a number on the New Orleans Buccaneers at Ballpark of St. Petersburg -- and that number was zero.
The St. Petersburg Pelicans hurler had what he later called "one of the best moments of my life," tossing a no-hitter and leading the Pelicans to victory, 4-0.
"This is something special," Brumfield said. "I knew from the fifth inning that I had a no-hitter working. I tried to get it out of my mind, but you just can't. They have too many scoreboards in the park. They're everywhere you look."
The right-hander faced only 32 batters in the no-hit gem, struck out 16 and walked 3.
"We simply couldn't get any wood on the ball," New Orleans manager Bobby Hexter said when asked about the epic performance. "Brumfield was brilliant out there. He certainly had our number."
This year, Brumfield has fashioned a 6-0 mark, 1.84 ERA and pitched 58.2 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .180 against him and he has logged 65 strikeouts.
