Chargers Come Up Short at Newark, 4-3
|
The Newark Eagles racked up a win at Eagles Park, bumping off the Detroit Chargers, 4-3. Tim Wharton, who started for Newark, pitched effectively for his team. The winning pitcher was Wharton, now 11-3. He tossed 7 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 4 and fanning 7. Picking up the save was Azania Nicoll. He's now 2 for 2 in save chances.
The Eagles got a big at-bat from left fielder Joe Keenan. For the game, Keenan was 1 for 4 with a home run, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. In the bottom of the third, with a runner on 1st, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 12th home run of the season gave Newark a 4-3 lead.
"I was a little disappointed," said Detroit manager Mike Anderson. "We could've and should've scored more runs."
The win hiked the Newark record to 45-33.
