Mike Smith did all he could to help his team win. In the end, though, it wasn't enough to keep the Edmonton Drillers from being beaten, 9-6, to the Newark Eagles at Drillers Field. Newark second baseman Joe Santagata contributed a timely at-bat in the top of the fifth. With two down, he hit a slider to left-center field for a 2-run single. It was his 50th hit of the season and put the Eagles ahead, 5-2.

Santagata said his wife shared good advice with him before the game. "She said, 'Don't allow this game to make you mad.' When I thought about it, I realized this is just a game. I was able to relax at the plate."
