Paul Easterling of the St. Louis Lions was on top of his game.

The 28-year-old tantalized the Tampa Bay Thunder with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 2-0.

"He had the changeup working," Tampa Bay manager Kevin Norris said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The St. Louis hurler had 9 strikeouts, gave up 2 walks and surrendered 5 hits in his complete-game effort.

Easterling told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

To date this year, in 11 starts, Easterling has crafted a 7-3 mark with a 3.19 ERA.
