New York City Blanks Miami, 1-0
Saturday, July 23rd , 2011
John Stone of the New York City Blues was on top of his game.

The 26-year-old tantalized the Miami Sun Sox with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 1-0.

"He had the changeup working," Miami manager Barry Lolicht said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The New York City hurler had 9 strikeouts, gave up 1 walk and surrendered 4 hits in his complete-game effort.

Stone told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

This year, Stone has a 5-1 mark in 9 starts with a 5.40 ERA. He has given up 76 hits in 56.2 innings, struck out 53 and issued 18 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .319 batting average against him.
