Cutthroats Even With Mavericks After Extra-Innings Win
The Denver Cutthroats went the distance and then some at Mavericks Ballpark to drag themselves back into a tie with the Houston Mavericks.

It took 11 innings to settle Game 2 of the Cup Qualifier, but Denver eventually took the 5-3 win behind the efforts of pitcher Jesse Steele. Steele threw 7.0 innings of 6-hit ball to aid the Denver cause. The clubs are now tied 1-1 in their best-of-7 series.

Denver needed the clutch hitting of Tom Smolar to seal the deal. The left fielder swatted a solo home run in the top of the 11th inning to put the Cutthroats on top, 4-3. For the game, Smolar had 1 home run and 1 single in 5 at-bats.

"It was a good day but I'm not letting my guard down," Smolar said. "I'll let my guard down as soon as someone puts a big, fat championship ring on my finger."

Game 3 is scheduled for Tuesday at Cutter's Cove in Denver.
