The stakes were high. Luke Whalen was ready.

The right-hander turned in a performance for the ages at Mavericks Ballpark, pitching a 9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the Houston Mavericks to victory in Game 1 of the Cup Qualifier. Whalen held the Denver Cutthroats to 7 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 9. The win got the best-of-7 series off to a good start for Houston, which now leads 1-0.

Whalen confounded Denver hitters. Over 9 innings, he allowed no runs on 7 hits.

"Luke kept his poise and got the job done," said Houston manager Kevin Read. "He was outstanding."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Mavericks Ballpark in Houston.
