Newark wasted an exceptional performance by pitcher Michael Maya, falling to the Southern California Empires, 4-2. Maya threw 7.0 innings of shutout ball for the losing team. The Empires sit in 4th place in the West Division with a record of 25-28.

Zach Rentz came through with a big-time hit for Southern California. The right fielder smacked a grand slam home run in the top of the ninth inning to give his team the lead, 4-2. It was his only hit, but it was clutch.

"Bottom line," said Newark skipper Elijah Jackson, "we didn't play well enough to win."
