Cardenas Grabs ABC Reliever of the Year Award

He's a veteran presence in the St. Petersburg Pelicans bullpen and now Federico Cardenas can say he's a 2009 award winner.

The bullpen ace was today named the Amateur Baseball Circuit Reliever of the Year Award winner.

"When you're 40 years old, your main objective is to just stay healthy and stay productive. I guess I did that this year," he said.

The award was won on the strength of a season that featured 16 saves in 39 relief appearances, with 76 strikeouts in 60 innings and a record of 6-2 to go with his 1.65 ERA.

He received 10 first place votes out of a possible 18. Sam Kenney of the Albuquerque Coyotes finished second in voting with 8 first place votes, while Tim Pierson of the Arlington Stars finished third.
