The Southern California Empires inaugurated the 2009 campaign with a disappointing 6-2 loss to the Green Bay Braves at Empires Stadium. Green Bay designated hitter Michel Penalver had a big impact on the outcome. He was 1-3 with a home run and 2 walks. He scored 2 times and drove in 4. Jon Romano picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 1-0. Chris Harpel, who finished 5th in the in innings pitched with 161.0 last year, was tagged with the loss.
Penalver had a game-changing home run in the top of the seventh. On a 2-2 fastball from Chris Harpel, he banged a grand slam home run to right-center, giving the Braves a 6-2 lead. It was the 1st home run of the year for Penalver.
"I thought we played a nice game," Penalver told the Green Bay Times. "Good pitching, timely hitting, it was all there."
