Pete Phillips impressed in the 5-4 New York City win over Houston. Phillips was 3 for 4 with a double and 2 singles. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. Phil Knobbe, who is a three-time All-Star, earned the save for New York City. The 6th-place Blues are now 17-21, the Mavericks 24-14.
The game was at a stalemate until right fielder Dan Stricklin came to bat in the top of the ninth. Facing Houston pitcher Kevin Phillips, he hit a 1-1 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting New York City on top, 5-4.
"I was a little disappointed," said Houston manager Kevin Read. "We could've and should've scored more runs."
