The Las Vegas Aces had no answer for Houston Mavericks pitcher Luke Whalen. They failed to score a single run against him, losing, 4-0. Las Vegas managed only 3 hits off Whalen, who had 7 strikeouts.

The extraordinarily popular Whalen got a standing ovation from the hometown crowd as he left the field, the applause continuing until he returned from the dugout to tip his cap to the crowd.

"Mavericks fans are the best fans, in my opinion," he said. "It's a great feeling to throw a shutout under any circumstances, but to do it with the crowd behind you like that is just incredible."

This season, Whalen has worked 40.2 innings with 51 strikeouts en route to a 3-3 record and a 6.42 ERA.
