Houston Mavericks starter Luke Whalen turned in a top-notch performance against the Salt Lake City Coyotes at Alpines Park. The result was a win for the Mavericks, 4-2. In 7 innings, Whalen surrendered 6 hits, while striking out 6 and walking 2. He allowed 2 runs. Kevin Phillips closed the game out for Houston, earning his 3rd save.

Houston used the timely hitting of Jeremy Miller to seize the win. The first baseman stroked a 2-run single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Mavericks on top, 4-2. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"We'll kick back tonight, then get set for the next one," Miller said.

Salt Lake City, at 5-12, is off to a poor start in 2007.
