Whitmyer Slugs Eagles to 6-5 Win
|
Getting a good performance from center fielder John Whitmyer, the Newark Eagles defeated the Philadelphia Keystones, 6-5. Whitmyer went 2 for 3 with 2 home runs and a walk, while scoring 3 times and driving in 3 for the Eagles. Allberto Menagem was the winning pitcher. Over 7.1 innings, he allowed 5 runs on 7 hits, with 4 walks and 6 strikeouts. John Mouser recorded the save, making him 5 for 5.
Newark used the bat of Mike Gartrell to get the win. The catcher hammered a 2-run home run in the top of the second inning to put the Eagles ahead, 2-0. It was his lone hit in 3 at-bats, but it did its damage.
"It was a solid team effort," said Gartrell after the game.
With the victory, the Eagles upped their record to 48-32.
