Providence Beats Houston in Amateur Circuit Cup Sunday, October 5th , 2003 With a 8-5 win over the Houston Apollos tonight at Providence Field, the Providence Grays wrapped up their 1st title in team history. Providence left little doubt who was the better club. "Team" was the word of the day as the Grays celebrated the culmination of their banner year in the victors clubhouse following the game. "Hitting, pitching, fielding; those are all things you need to win, but most importantly you need a team, a team that works together toward the same collective goal," said Providence manager Tim Ebbers. "Our players felt that way all year and they played that way. When one guy had an off day, 24 others stepped up their game and filled the void." A jovial mood filled the air as Providence celebrated into the night. The city's mayor said parade plans were underway and a "huge celebration" in the works. "We're going to celebrate our team, our championship Providence Grays," the mayor said. The champions completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the East Division and a 55-33 record.
