Vacaville and Southern California duked it out and the Steelheads came out victorious.
The Vacaville Steelheads got a stellar performance from pitcher Nick McCluskey, who handcuffed the Southern California offense en route to a win, 5-2, at Ballpark of Vacaville. McCluskey went 8.1 innings to notch the win. He scattered 8 hits, walked 1, and struck out 8. His record improves to 1-0. Mario Estrada picked up the save for Vacaville, his 1st of the year.
John Whitmyer, who finished 5th in the SPBC in stolen bases with 15 last year, chipped in for Vacaville with a 3-run home run in the bottom of the fifth. For the game, the left fielder had 2 hits in 3 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 3 RBI.
"I like to keep things lively in the clubhouse," said McCluskey. "Believe me, it's much easier after a win."
The Steelheads, now 3-0, have hit the ground running this season.
