Mavericks Hope Opening Day Win Bodes Well for Season
The 2002 season is off to a good start for the Houston Mavericks. The hometown Mavericks dumped the San Francisco Peanuts, 5-2, at Mavericks Ballpark. Tony Carreras spearheaded the win. He was 2-2 with 2 singles and 2 walks, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. Sam Jacobs got credit for the win, improving to 1-0. He allowed 2 runs on 5 hits in 6 innings. Josh Rouse finished the game for Houston and earned his 1st save.

The game turned with one out in the bottom of the fourth when Carreras, who signed a 3-year contract worth $3,830,000 on 01/01/2002, hit a run-scoring single. It propelled the Mavericks into the lead, 1-0.

Carreras told a Houston Gazette reporter that he was "gratified" with the win.
