Pro Circuit Cup Game 1 Victory for Ortiz and Houston
The Houston Mavericks started the Pro Circuit Cup in style today, downing the visiting St. Louis Lions at Mavericks Ballpark by a score of 4-1 to stake an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Mavericks left-hander Jose Ortiz threw 8.1 innings of 7-hit ball.

Ortiz, who was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, threw 141 pitches over 8.1 innings, while allowing 1 run.

"It has been an incredible experience today," Ortiz said in the clubhouse following the game. "It's a short list of people who have started in the Pro Circuit Cup at all, and an even shorter list who have done a good job of it."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Mavericks Ballpark in Houston.
