The St. Louis Lions topped the Chicago Blackhawks by the score of 3-2 and moved into a 1-1 tie in the Cup Qualifier today. The largest share of the credit belongs to St. Louis starter Ismael Cruz, who threw 7.1 innings of 6-hit ball in the win.

Had Dan Kelly not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Kelly hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 3-2, in favor of the Lions.

"They say the first rule of the playoffs is to win the home games," Cruz said afterward. "It feels nice, but it is kind of what we were supposed to do."

The next game is set to be played for Friday, October 4th , 2002 at Trident Field in Chicago.
