Eagles Score Late, Stun Capitals, 6-3
|
The inspired effort of Ottawa second baseman Jordan Hayes was not enough to prevent a loss, 6-3, to the Newark Eagles. Hayes went 3 for 3 with 3 singles and 2 walks. Carlos Rojas got credit for the win, improving to 2-0. He allowed no runs on 2 hits in 2 innings. The win elevated the Eagles to 12-6.
The game was at a stalemate until catcher Raul Gonzales came to bat in the top of the eighth. Facing Ottawa pitcher C.J. Messer, he hit a 1-0 fastball for a 2-run single. It was a game-changer, putting Newark on top, 4-2.
"We'll relax tonight and get back after it tomorrow," Gonzales said after the game.
