Philadelphia got a terrific performance from pitcher Matthew Steele, but it wasn't enough to beat the Houston Mavericks. Houston won the The Key contest, 4-3. Steele threw 7.0 innings allowing 2 runs for the losing team. The winner was Houston reliever John Charles, now 2-0. The loser was Bob Copping. Houston has 6 straight wins, Philadelphia 5 straight losses.

Houston used a clutch hit from Tony Carreras to get the win. The right fielder drilled a 2-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to put the Mavericks ahead, 4-3. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"If you want to be considered a good team, these are the kind of games you have to win," said Houston manager Kevin Read.
